I have installed fedora core 1 on a poweredge 700 and the network card is
yet not visible.

I understand that...I just cant make it work and I have read of the nv
driver's ability to do dual heads (using xinerama of course). If anyone
knows a way to make dual heads work with xinerama/fedora tools/editing
xorg.conf/or even brute force, I would be interested in knowing it. 
Either way I'll be using nvidia and twinview as soon as NVidia gets around
to writing a new driver

I really like the idea with the better "karma" ;) I am also trying to 
download fc2 via bittorrent and got dreamfull rates with about 80 kb/sec 
the last hours. However the speed broke down this evening and I am 
really happy about 10kb/sec. I asked myself if there are meanwhile to 
much sourcers for the tracker, so communication is slowing down. However 
I really think currently it is all about luck. Wishing luck that the 
speed will increase the next hours again ;)

Its a good thing that the system shuts down when it overheats.  Why would 
you want to change that behavior? (BTW, have you opened the case, taken 
the fan off of the heat sink and vacuumed it out really well? That may 
stop the sticky fan problem.

I got that.  Isn't the likely cause of the fan not starting accumulated 
dirt in the fan itself?  In other words, isn't it a hardware and not a 
software issue?

I've never been especially impressed with torrent. It's never offered me
much improvement over ftp.

I pointed torrent at the Duke server this morning.  The download of all 4
iso's concluded about 30 minutes ago. That's approx. 8 hours of download
time (obviously, the projected download times reported by torrent are not
to be believed). Top speed was around 150 kb/s, but the rate varied a
lot, with frequent drops as low as 6 and 7 kb/s.  Upload speed seemed to
remain constant in the mid 20's.

I tried torrent yesterday, letting it run for a few hours before giving
up.  Speeds were always below 10 kb/s.

Dunno if it makes much difference to torrent, but I'm within shouting
distance of Duke and RedHat.  If they were handing out actual CD's, I
could have made 4 or 5 round trips while waiting for the download to
finish. :-)

I thought the CPU fan starting wasn't under BIOS or any other control on a
regular main board. Laptops have their own peculiarities, so I'm ignoring
them. 

Starting a box results in the fan spinning up almost instantly, even before
I get a BIOS signature displayed on the monitor.

We may be able to monitor CPU and other fan speeds, but is there an actual
control mechanism to turn it on or off? If so, what API or control point
provides such access?

Have you got a working configuration that uses xinerama under FC2's nv 
driver? I was unable to successfully set it up on a GeForce4 Ti 4200 
with both video ports.

Reverting to FC1 and using the nvidia driver plus TwinView was 
successful.

You keep talking about older ATI cards.  The point is an ATI 7500 that 
I have at work, works great.  Support within XFree86.  Newer Radeon 
cards are only supported in 2d (in January).  Have you tried to play a 
3d game at 1 frame per sec or slower?  This is the problem, no 3d 
accelleration.

3 weeks of fighting with the ATI drivers only to find in a obscure 
link that 3d wasn't supported even in the 3d driver.

Believe me, I didn't want to throw a brand new video card away.  I 
fought and fought trying to get it to work.  I couldn't even play 
movies on the computer due to the video drivers.  ATI even pointed to 
an opensource DRI site that did not support the chipset in the 9600. 
I now have a 9600 card that I am trying to get rid of.  But I am 
enjoying full 3d and can watch movies will surfing the web.

it in fc1 over usb! I guess something wrong with the usb module..any
