$ grep -n DirectoryIndex /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf.orig
377:# DirectoryIndex: sets the file that Apache will serve if a
directory
384:DirectoryIndex index.html index.html.var

So within the RPM for Apache2 on my FC1 the DirectoryIndex is set. And
if you are running PHP then index.php is set too:

$ grep -n DirectoryIndex /etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf
17:DirectoryIndex index.php
