problem with starting gnome related to alsa sound detection

When I ran startx this morning the X display tried to start a
gnome-session but hung. I did a ctrl-alt f1 to get to command line mode.
The following error messages were observed:

a series of messages with
audio-alsa: no cards found! repeated many times. Then the message:

** (gnome-session): warning: ** Esound failed to start
*** attempt to put segment in horiz list twice

Apparently this is enough to not cause gnome to start. I tried startx
again with the same results.
In desperation I typed reboot. After I logged in I entered startx. This
time gnome started. Has anyone else had problems with gnome not starting
because of sound card not being recognized?
