xinetd is running, I've deleted all of the old *.rpmsave files in the
/etc/xinetd.d directory, service xinetd reload, and service dovecot
start fails as before....

 From "checkconfig --list":

xinetd based services:
         telnet: off
         time: on
         chargen: off
         chargen-udp: off
         daytime: off
         daytime-udp: off
         echo: off
         echo-udp: off
         time-udp: off
         wu-ftpd: off
         rsync: off
         comsat: off
         swat: on
         talk: off
         ntalk: off
         tftp: off
         finger: on
         bootps: off
         auth: on
         uucp: off
         ktalk: off
         services: off
         cups-lpd: off
         sgi_fam: on

I don't see any mention of imap running here....
