FC3 swapped my vaio into useless thrashing

So, I tried FC3 on my Sony VAIO, pcg-sr33. I noticed that the
performance wasn't great, and then I tried to do a yum update. The disk
thrashed so much that nothing on the screen would refresh. I finally had
to power it down.

Any ideas what would cause this? I tossed Ubuntu on it and it's working
great, but I'm very curious what would cause this.

Cheers,
Mike
