this is the output before:

# grep Hz /proc/cpuinfo
model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
cpu MHz : 2791.430

and this folder is empty:

/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/

i don't have the files you were telling me about.

i've followed the link u gave me, changed 'speedstep-smi' to
'p4-clockmod' (which is for p4) not 'peedstep-ich':

edit /etc/cpuspeed.conf, modify the DRIVER line to read:

	DRIVER="p4-clockmod"

add this line into /etc/modprobe.conf:

	options p4-clockmod smi_port=0xb2 smi_cmd=0x82 smi_sig=1

and now i get this output:

# grep Hz /proc/cpuinfo
model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
cpu MHz : 348.921

the files in this folder were created:

# ls /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/
cpuinfo_cur_freq scaling_available_governors scaling_max_freq
cpuinfo_max_freq scaling_cur_freq scaling_min_freq
cpuinfo_min_freq scaling_driver scaling_setspeed
scaling_available_frequencies scaling_governor

and i see the cpu speed varies now. i'm trying to find out if this will
influence the temperature. i'll give it a little time.
