I think the problem is that there is no section (does not matter what
number or UPDATEDEFAULT) in the grub.conf file for the new kernel.
I noted this as well and had to hand edit grub.conf and add the four
necessary lines then adjust the "default=n" to boot the desired
flavor.
I got busy/distracted and never looked to see if I missed anything in
the config/ setup.
