Cannot access USB devices

Due to a stupid error of mine, my kernel would not boot. I reinstalled
Fedora Core 2 without reformatting any of the ext2 partitions and
without installing any of the optional programs.

Now my USB keyboard works intermittently, the USB mouse not at all nor
can I access my external USB HDD where I backup my files.

Googling did not come up with any helpful information.
