Oh, my...   Such quaint, and no doubt proper language.  A possible 
attempt to expand my ancient vocabulary?  At 70, odds are that its a 
wasted effort.  But one never knows.  I personally would have used 
'un-enlightened' as the more common (to me) usage rather than 
benighted.  But then, my high school diploma is a GED.  Been too busy 
lassoing electrons and making them do usefull work for a living for 
over 55 years now. :-)
