Well - you'll have to remove those packages as well (assuming you are
not using them).

Hmm.. not a good idea. You could install this in a different location
temporarily - and use it. (without removing 1.7.2)
Or just wait for the official updates (assuming FC2 here).
Alternatively grab the 1.7.2.src.rpm - and 1.7.3.tar.bz2 file - modify
mozilla.spec file and build 1.7.3.rpm files.
This is what I've done on FC1. (no mozilla updates for FC1 in a long
time). The only issue I have is - the rpm files are 10 times larger
than downloadable binaries (1.7.2) - and I don't know why.. This
should be temporary until prebuilts for FC1 appear at (so not a big
deal):
