You might try the rawhide version of X. I had the crashing problem and X
just disappeared, leaving the remnants on the display. This was with an
828656 Graphics Controller.
You might try running noof and StarWars for easy crashing for confirmation.
Refer to the bug that I opened and closed for my ordeal and gratified
with the rawhide CVS tree correcting the problem.
