I have been using a spamassassin filter with evolution for a long time. 
One thing you can do to speed up processing is to order your filter such
that spamassassin runs only on those messages which might be spam.  In
other words I have filters that move all mailing list messages to
separate folders, spamassassin never looks at those messages.  This has
worked very well since very little spam hits the list.
