try
/dev/sda1  /mnt/usb  defaults   noauto,users  0  0

That works flawlessly for me.

The kudzu option will delete the /mnt/usb mountpoint if the device is
not plugged in at boot time, so you may need to manually create it after
making this change in fstab.
