power managment problems

I appreciate all the feedback. However, it turn out to be that IBM
T42's need to be shutdown and left alone for a while if the battery
drops to critical leves in order to recharge. So, it was not the
application but IBM's default power settings.
They recommend to buy a second battery and a recharger for a quick fix
of this type of problems.

For future reference, if you come across this question again, you
might consider telling them to read their laptop manual (as I
should've done before getting paranoid).
