CD-Burner not immediately detected

hello list,

i'm having recurring problems with fedora core 3 not automatically
detecting my cd-burner (it's an LG combo drive). i am able to read
cd-rom and dvd-rom discs but on k3b, i don't see any cd-burner device.

according to dmesg:
hdc: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4521B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive

i'm stating that this problem is recurring because i also have another
box that uses the drive and at first it wasn't able to detect the
drive as a burner. after a few days, for some strange reason, fedora
was able to detect the drive and i am now able to burn with the drive.
