grub oddity

Normal.

Symlink points to the wrong place - it should be:

$ ls -l /etc/grub.conf
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 22 May 20  2004 /etc/grub.conf -> 
../boot/grub/grub.conf

Not sure how your system got into this state, but the files should be in 
/boot/grub, not /etc/grub.
