I use a terminal window with up2date -u as root
It gives the mirror, and if it's 1/2 way around the world or it seems to
hang or be slow I just hit Ctrl + c to kill it, hit the up arrow for the
command line again and hit enter.  It seems to take 3 or less tries for
a good one.
