Grub question

Is it possible that same instructions
kernel (hdx,0)/vmlinuz..........
initrd (hdx,0)/initrd..........

give different behaviour:
1) a kernel panic if inserted in an automatic procedure (bootable CD)
2) a smooth booting if inserted manually at grub prompt

Please note that this is a behaviour of latest kernels, the original 
2.6.9-1.667 works fine.
Any clue???
