Pentium-D Processors?

Whenever I try to boot an SMP kernel, the boot hangs while  
uncompressing the kernel.  There is never any error message - it just  
stops.

It happens every time, without fail.  The machine has 4 gigs of RAM,  
but that shouldn't really matter.
