cd player not working

The error message I get is "drive error" that is it. Then the cd does
not spin up or anything like it usually does when you try to open it.

1) what exactly does the error message say?
2) Do you have an audio cable running from the CD-Player to the sound
card? My understanding, which may be out-of-date, is that this cable
is still required in Linux.

Usually, when #2 is the only problem, the disc queues and begins
playing, you just can't hear anything (unless you plug headphones into
the jack on the front of the drive. So probably you have some other
issue, too.
