nVidia or ATI?

The current Xorg driver doesn't work correctly with my nvidia 
nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 440 Go 64M]

in my laptop.  Switching to console (text) gives a scrambled unusable
display.

It is usable ONLY if you don't need to switch to the console.
