missing /dev/dsp in FC3

Trouble is, I can't remember when it worked.  It certainly worked in FC2
but I don't have a handle on whether FC2->FC3 upgrade or kernel/alsa rpm
upgrade precipitated the problem.
 This bug looks like it might be linked - but the significance is kind
of lost on me:
