Strange, I've never come across a problem with that, and I generally use 
the much-longer version recommended at:

http://www.fedora.us/wiki/PackagingHints

i.e.:
%{_tmppath}/%{name}-%{version}-%{release}-root-%(%{__id_u} -n)
