Given that the "localdomain" network usually doesn't have a mail server,
looking for one wouldn't help.  And most of the MUAs on linux can easily
read the local mail spool in addition to the remote POP and/or IMAP
server.  I do agree that it would be nice to be able to identify an alias
for root during install and IIRC it was discussed not too long ago on the
-devel list.

If you are using you ISP's mail server then you have the issue of the of
the laptop being on a foreign network.  If you are using a remote mail
address for cron, does it retry when it can't find the SMTP server?
