Although I have no default sendmail.mc here, IMHO what you describe last
is (in contradiction to your words) the default setting with SMTP AUTH
and the former alternate is a pre-defined but commented setting in the
shipped sendmail.mc.
define(`confAUTH_OPTIONS', `A')dnl
versus
dnl define(`confAUTH_OPTIONS', `A p')dnl
[You may say "just a small `p' - but a big difference]
As these settings are commented in the sendmail.mc, the MTA
administrator has no big deal to make the choice. I always prefer the
secure way; which too means/needs to create a certificate and activating
it.
