Thanks mike and Steven for the help. Your suggestions did work. However, 
I just noticed that, for some reason, the haldeamon service was stopped! 
Starting it again made all work as fine as before: plug the usbdrive in, 
the mount point (/media/usbstick) appears, and I can just 'mount 
/media/usbstick', as always.
