IF you use labels in th fstabs.  My normal kernel builds do not use an 
initrd, so I usually convert the labels to /dev/hdax/hdbx/etc asap 
and build the filesystems into the kernel.  I've been bit by the 
labels just enough to be a bit wary of using them to the point where 
one loses the /dev/hdx# identity totally.
