domain name setting Q

Greetings;

I was just asked by a friend how to go about setting the machines 
domain name as returned by the 'domainname' command, and have it 
survive over a reboot, rather like the hostname now survives.

So how does one go about that?

The manpages seem a little hazy on this subject.
