FC3 installer can't detect 250GB sata drive

System:
        AOpen i865gm-IL board
        512 OZ RAM x2
        Intel P4 3.0 Ghz HT

With a WD2500JD sata drive, the FC3 (Nov 2004) installer fails when
detecting this drive -- throwing a bug error box.

any ideas?
