short and short ntp question

Ntpdate is a one time synchronization.  It does not continue to operate in the background.  You would need to have the ntpd service run at startup in order for ntp to run across reboots.  The server you wanted to connect to would go in the ntp.conf file.

To verify what ntp is doing: ntpd -q queries time servers.
