initrd question

Is the man page for initrd out of date? It has no
mentioning of etc/inittab or rc.sysinit.

I am not able to keep the /initrd or dev/ram0 after
booting. Could someone show me how to do it?
Commenting the section in rc.sysinit regarding /initrd
doesn't help.
