It depends on the processor.  A single P4 or xeon with
hyperthreading is ulilized as 2 processors and you need the
smp kernel/utilities to take advantages.  If you have a single
processor without hyperthreading, then you don't need the
smp versions.  If you are running the smp kernel, you can tell
if you have a processor with hyperthreading with:
"less /proc/cpuinfo".  If you see twice as many processors as
you really have, they are hyperthreaded.
