FC4: choppy sound - seems to be ESD?

OK, since today's alsa-lib/utils update I have the same problem, e.g.
with bzflag using ESD. I can "fix" that by asking bzflag to use "alsa"
but then sound becomes LoFi.

Sound is really broken all around.
