Cannot read VPD keys

Pay dirt: I found the Red Hat bugzilla on this, which links to a very

If you've got a motherboard using this family of NIC, the bug is probably 
filling your logs and causing 25-50  millisecond pauses in the kernel that 
can manifest as DVD skipping. There's a link to the tools necessary to fix 
the VPD checksum and information about a newer driver that promises better 
performance.
