Is Linux really faster than MS Windows ?

Windows cheats in some respect - allowing you to login before it is  
really done.

For example - after loging in Windows, I have to wait before I can dial  
my PPPoE - and I have to wait before iTunes will start - etc.

If I wait for 3 or 4 minutes after booting before logging it - it's all  
snappy. So windows, while it may be faster than Fedora (there are ways  
to speed up the running of init scripts) - is actually slower at being  
usable than it appears.
