Schroedinger's LG GSA-4163B: not detected/detected

Hi,

Just bought a LG GSA-4163B (A101, I can not upgrade to A103 firmware as
I have no windows) unit and found out that FC 2 with kernel
2.6.10-1.770_FC2 does not work. (ide0: Wait for ready failed before
probe !) And after that all access to /dev/hda results errors.

I tried it with all 2.6.10-kernels I have and with several 2.6.9
kernels. Sometimes it got detected with lower numbered 2.6.10-kernels
and with higher numbered 2.6.9 kernels and sometimes not. Knoppix 3.7
with 2.6.9 kernel does the trick every time.

A few questions:
1) Is there anything I can do to make the detection more reliable on
boot (and make it work on 2.6.10-1.770_FC2)? Some kernel-parameters perhaps?
2) Is this a bug I should report to somewhere and what should I report?
3) Is it likely that this will not change with update to FC3 are FC2 and
FC3 kernels very significantly different?
4) Is there something on bios that could be tweaked to make detection
more reliable?

It seems that after one boot with Knoppix 2.6 I am able to boot to some
older kernel once with not getting the cat killed by the probe. And of
course this once just happens to be boot with single user option when I
am trying to find the lucky kernel version that this time gets it.

A successful boot log follows (unsuccesfull differs only with probe
failure see above):
