You must be using FC2  I don't have a "Start-Here" icon on my desktop
Nor on roots desktop.
Even if I open up nautilus and type start-here:/// i do not have the
mentioned file path
What version of gnome are you using?  mine is  gnome-desktop-2.8.0-3
