Basically, "neither". You're really askin' for a religious flame war here,
but both KDE and GNOME are very full-featured and complicated desktop
environments. For an older/slower machine, I'd suggest something more
bare-bones instead. XFCE, or just plain Window Maker or Fluxbox.
