Unable to play video files

Hi

I have installed xine which took fairly long time for the
installation, but now I am lost i do not know how to start and use
Xine. I am using KDE 3.4 and there is no shortcut created for Xine.
Also when i try to use Totem, but the moment I open it, it says
application crached.
I have also tried to configure MPLAYER which i am struggling to install.

Apparantely I am unable to play any video files.
Do u suggest any other application to play the video files.
