how to force a hd check during boot up

Yes. Settings like following are possible:

$ cat /etc/sysconfig/autofsck

AUTOFSCK_DEF_CHECK=yes
PROMPT=yes
AUTOFSCK_TIMEOUT=30
AUTOFSCK_OPT=""
