I suppose that Firefox didn't popup a dialog about missing fonts. Have
you set MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO to 1?
The easiest way to do this is to edit /usr/bin/firefox. There you can
find a commented line with MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO.
