"I ended up installing the extra packages with rpm and telling it to
ignore the deps and force the installation" is probably the reason why
you're having problems with dependencies ever since. Forcing
installations is almost never the right thing to do. Actually resolving
the dependency issues (which admittedly is not easy on occasions) is far
better in the long run.
