I should make it clear that most of the problems occur when I connect
over xdmcp.
However, when when I use the -multiwindow, KDE menus are slow to update
and at times, I get tearing effects when the mouse is moved too fast.
As for network problem, I doubt it.
My FC4 workstation sits on the same network segment as both clients and
servers and I see no problems on my side. (When tunneling X over SSH)
The FreeNX is indeed an interesting option. Hopefully with some work, I
can get the NX source to compile on x86-64.
