also consider the possibility that ident requests are being made,
but blocked by a firewall or iptables/ipchains rule.

i don't know postfix, but it's common to see very sluggish connects
with exim which are a result of dropped ident packets. if postfix
should happen to be checking ident, then either fix the firewall
or turn ident checking off.
