detecting NIC's

Three boxes:

1.)     name:           arrakis

arrakis<------>switch<----->caladan
Arrakis can ping caladan when their NIC's are connected with RJ45 Cat 5e
cable across a switch, as in the above configuration.  (see terminal output.)


What I'm going for:
gateway<----->hub<------>box1, box2

Now I just need to shuffle some NIC's and or hard drives between caladan and
geidi prime.  I'm worried that I broke geidiprime, though, so I'm hesitant
to do this.  As near as I can tell I did it correctly,

but it's possible that I broke something :(

Is there something I can do to diagnose the situation *without* opening a
case?
