No more sound, fc3, after building lfs?

Problem: I finished building lfs, and that went great.  but, now, I get no 
output from my audio...
I do get this error message when kde boots:
error while initializing the sound driver:
device: /dev/audio cant be opened for playback(no such file or directory)

BUT!  when I look into /dev/  audio is indeed there.

any suggestions as to how I can get this to work?
Or suggestions as to where i should start looking?
