Subject: where is the log?

Hi all,
I just notice that I cannot find any info in the /var/log/messages when I
restarted any server such as httpd, ldap, etc.

I expect to see lines in /var/log/messages such as:
shutting down httpd - ok
starting up httpd - ok

Is there any conf that I should change regarding the syslog?
Thanks.
