USB mouse problems (mouse strts working only when i start the network conf program)

What does lspci, lsusb, and lsmod show immediately after booting, before
running system-config-network?  If the usb modules are not loaded, does
'modprobe uhci_hcd ehci_hcd' (w/o quotes) get the mouse working?  Also,
can you cat /etc/modprobe.conf?
