screen not found (toshiba laptop)

dear all
I have downloaded the ati driver configuration file and lunched this
command (the system tells that I have x700 version and that I can override
it)
X_VERSION=x690 ./ati-driver-installer-8.23.7-i386.run
the installation took place fine and when lunching startx command I got
this (even after configuring display)


(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
XIO:  fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
      after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
