I would suspect that if the WinXP system goes into recovery mode if MBR
is overwritten, there is another problem that is afoot and overwriting
the MBR is merely a symptom of the issue but not really the issue
itself. If I recall correctly, FC-2 or thereabouts had an issue
ascertaining the geometry and the partition tables of the hard drives,
which probably a little research would provide much information about
the resolution of that issue.

Therein lies one of the problems with your perspective though - as I
think you cling on to a Fedora release which has long since gone EOL and
your experience is heavily influenced by what was a radical release, and
I think Les alluded to the fact that there were probably some issues
with FC-2 that were never really quite fixed and unfortunately, the
advice you lend is potentially out of perspective with the FC-4 and FC-5
releases which are the current releases and are the only releases that
are on topic on this message base.

I do recognize that if by merely allowing winboot.ini to handle the
bootup process actually fixes the symptom, that I might be inclined to
quit there myself.
